His research interests are cognition, teaching and research methodology related to the study of reading. He currently conducts research on school contexts and literacy, with particular attention to classroom work and discussion practices designed to promote students' understanding of the text.

José Hélder Pinheiro Alves is a professor of Brazilian Literature at the Federal University of Campina Grande, Paraíba. He published, among other works, Poesia na sala de aula (2007), and, with Ana Cristina Marinho Lúcio Cordel no cotidiano escolar. He has a master's degree in Language and Teaching from UFCG, where he guides research aimed at the practice of literary reading in the classroom. He has already directed several works aimed with Cordel Literature and its teaching. He has articles published in journals and books focused mainly on poetry practices in the school context.
